About This Item
647-660 pages. Quarto (10" x 7") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Hispanic American Historical Review Volume XXVII, Number 4 complete issue. First edition. One basic economic problem in sixteenth-century New Spain was that of securing an adequate supply of food for the colony. Widespread deficiencies in the grain supply were particularly common, occasioned by underproduction, unfavorable weather, hoarding, labor shortages, maldistribution, or by a combination of these factors. In periods of acute shortage the lack of grain became a threat to the entire colonial economy. Such a period of crisis existed in the decade from 1575-1585, and during these ten years a comprehensive effort was made to solve the grain-supply problems by means of legislation. This work reflect that period. Condition: Edge wear with small chips, spine ends chipped, corners bumped else very good.
