About This Item
This is a first edition of Roger Berthoud's 1982 biography of the famous English artist Graham Sutherland.
Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) was notable for his work in glass, fabrics, prints and portraits. His work was much inspired by landscape and religion, and he designed the massive tapestry, Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph, for the re-built Coventry Cathedral. He worked as war artist, and famously painted a commissioned portrait of Winston Churchill, which Churchill so hated that his wife burned it.
Roger Berthoud (1934-2013) was a prominent English journalist who was also well-known for this biography, and that of Henry Moore.
This copy is in pristine condition, clean and thoroughly unmarked.
The dust jacket has a couple of scratches on the back and minor shelf-wear on the spine.
It includes, however, an original clipping from the October 3, 1993 Observer. The clipping is a letter to the editor, from the English painter, art historian and Essex University professor John Nash, who wishes to point out that Sutherland "lacked confidence in his skill as a draughtsman" and "was deliberately devious" in his work.
