The first of two volumes dealing with the political and social events during World War II and covers the period up until the entry of Japan into the war. Early chapters review at length the development of Australian ideas on defence and foreign policy in the period between the world wars and recount the measures taken in preparation for war. The book goes on to study wartime political events, the factors that shaped decisions regarding Australian forces and war industry. Woven through all of this is an account of various social changes that were taking place at the time and the way these affected popular opinion. So the book looks not only at Government but also at the people of Australia. . Reprint. Hardback.
