About This Item

[New York]: Distaff Side, 1939. First edition. Number 165 of 195 numbered copies. This one INSCRIBED by Goudy on the birthday-greetings foldout inserted at front, "To Dorothy Bevis with the highest regard of Fred W. Goudy 5/1/39 Los A." Leura Dorothy Bevis (1904-1996) was a bookseller at Dawsons Bookshop and later an associate editor at the University of California Press where she started "The Pierian Spring." Collects 27 original contributions from various printers - most notably women - which were prepared separately and then bound together. Contributions include ones printed by Lucina Wakefield (Marchbanks Press); Helen Olson (Spiral Press); B. Evans & Elizabeth Mann (Overbrook Press); Madeline Forgue; Evelyn Harter, Emily E. Connor (Marchbanks Press); Jane Grabhorn (Jumbo Press); Elizabeth Wood (Harbor Press); Jean B. Barr (Grady Press); Mary D. Alexander (Univ. of Chicago Press); E. L. Hildreth & Co.; Club of Printing Women of New York; Katherine Adcock (Marchbanks Press); et al. 16mo quarter beige open-weave cloth spine lettered in blue; blue marbled paper boards. Marbled paper quite rubbed with boards visible at corners, cloth at spine ends beginning to fray, but otherwise quite good with binding sound and contents still fresh and clean. Uncommon.
