About This Item

[London:], c1640-1660.. Believed to be from GaudenÕs Suspiria. Our print matches that in the British Museum, though the text Òplace figure at page 1Ó is lacking, possibly making this an earlier or later edition than the BM shown, all other points match, that text could be trimmed from this print as well. A cedar tree represnting the traditional episcopal church, inscribed on the truck ÒThe Church CatholickÓ with two smaller shoots from the trunk labelled ÒPresbytery and ÒIndependencyÓ. Lettered with various inscriptions of churches. ÒI would call particular attention to the elaborate plate entitled ÒThe Goodly Cedar of Apostolick and Catholick Episcopacy, compared with the modern Shoots and Slips of divided Novelties in the ChurchÓ... Gauden was clearly very proud of this plate, which, in his Funeral Sermon on Bishop Browning, he describes as a Òfamiliar and plain emblem.Ó [- The Academy Vol.XXIII, 1883].. 32.5 x 27.5cm. Single leaf, double page.. Beautiful double-page engraving, mounted on larger plain leaf. Minor stains to outer margin, overall, a very nice piece. Suitable for framing. BM 1872, 0511.1289.
