About This Item

New York, NY: Harper & Brothers. Very Good. 1934. 1st Trade Edition. Hardcover. Woodcuts; This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking the dust jacket. The spine ends, corners and edges of the book covers have some light bumping and wear. There is noticeable bumping with some paper loss to the corners of the book covers. The top front spine joint of the book cover has a splotch of ground-in dirt, and the spine, with it's cloth cover, has some light, but noticeable finger and ground-in dirt. The inside front spine hinge has cracking. The text pages are clean and bright. The woodcut illustrations are by J. J. Lankes. "Lankes worked primarily in the woodcut medium and had studios, at various times, in both Gardenville, New York and Hilton Village in Newport News, Virginia. His works, numbering about thirteen hundred, helped elevate woodblock prints beyond illustrations in commercial productions to recognition as a fine art. His work was heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and by William Morris. He illustrated works for many notable authors, including American poet Robert Frost, American author Sherwood Anderson, and British author Beatrix Potter. Lankes maintained lifelong friendships and collaborations with both Robert Frost and Sherwood Anderson. " (from Wikipedia) .
