About This Item

London: The Folio Society. As New with no dust jacket. 2009. 1st Thus (Folio Society Edition); First Printing. Hardcover. AS NEW IN Nr. FINE SLIPCASE. In the original publisher's tan based cloth boards with a large illustration of a Hen in black, white and salmon and title in black on an oval salmon block to the front board, with bright white and black titling to the spine. The book is housed ln the Original Publishers' Near FINE Plain tan paper covered SLIPCASE with just two tiny spots on one side only, that mar it from being noted Fine. The book is Externally and Internally FINE. No dustjacket as issued. NO Inscriptions or Marks. (vii) + (1) + 333 pp. The Frontispiece and illustrations in the book are delightful, mainly full colour, but some b/w, drawings by Alice Tait. Now a Classic this is a superb Edition done in the way only the Folio society can do so well. "Seasonality is now the top priority of all those who take their eating and cooking seriously." She says in the Introduction to the original edition published in 1971 "...I feel that delight lies in the seasons and what they bring us...the strawberries that come in May and June straight from the fields, the asparagus of a special occasion, kippers from Craster in July and August, the first lamb of the year from Wales, in October the freshest walnuts from France where they are eaten with new cloudy wine. This is GOOD FOOD.....The encouragement of fine food is not greed or gourmandise; it can be seen as an aspect of the anti-pollution movement in that it indicates concern for the quality of environment......" . How prophetic she was when she pointed out to us the importance of locally-produced, fresh food and she wrote those words over 35 years ago! The book is divided into sections covering Fish; Meat and Game; Vegetables; Fruit; - and importantly the book contains the recipe for her famous curried parsnip soup! This lovely Folio Society edition follows the text of the First Edition (1971) with minor emendations and includes the text-enhancing drawings of Alice Tait. Apart from the two tiny spots on the slipcase, as noted above, this is an Excellent Very Clean, Tight and Bright 'As New' copy. Looks Unused/Unread. GIFT Quality. (Note: International buyers) This book is overweight and heavy and MAY require extra postage depending on your location. ; Small, Thick 4to 9" - 11" tall .
