About This Item
Longfellow, Henry Wadsworth. THE GOLDEN LEGEND. Boston: Ticknor, Reed & Fields, 1851. First edition, first printing. Original brown cloth, gilt. Simply inscribed in Longfellow's distinctive hand, on the flyleaf in ink: "From the Author." Spine ends chipped, faint damp marks on end papers, else a tight crisp copy. Longfellow sometimes inscribed copies in this fashion when leaving them with the publisher for mailing. This long narrative poem is based on Hartmann von der Aue's treatment of a psycho-sexual German medieval romance. It is not based on the famous "lives of the saints" of the same name, as often claimed. The first printing was 3,600 copies and this popular book went through five printings within the year. BAL 12102.
