About This Item

Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York, 1909. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good- Condition. Illustrator: Lawren S. Harris. Book First printing with the notice "Published October 1909" on the copyright page. This is a collection of stories that are based on the author's travels in 1907 to 1908 when he was correspondent of Harper's Magazine in Syria, Palestine, Arabia and Egypt. The stories are so well crafted they read almost like fiction and are accompanied by 17 illustrations (including the color frontispiece) printed on glossy paper. Both Duncan and Harris were Canadians, although the author largely worked for U.S. publications, including The New York Evening Post. He was also a professor of rhetoric and English in Pennsylvania and Kansas. Harris is best known as one of the founding members of "The Group of Seven" -- Canadian artist who applied impressionistic techniques to landscapes set in the Algoma region, although this work dates from a decade before the group was founded Size: 8"-9" - Octavo (8vo). 211 pages. Item Type: Book. Text block is in generally good shape, there there is some separation starting between some of the signatures (especially between pages 54-55 and 150-51). There are some tide marks that, for some reason, have resulted in more visible tide marks at the top left margin of the plates and about 2" down the gutter, as well as the top edge and gutters of the end papers than on the regular text pages themselves . Bound in green cloth over boards with bright gilt title and decoration on the front cover and spine. There are scattered areas of the covers and spine that have lost their gloss, so the book may have had some exposure to moisture that caused that. Corners are sharp, though worn at the tips. There is some moderate wear at the head and foot of the spine. Front hinge is slightly shaken. No foxing in this copy. There is a presentation inscription on the front free end paper "For faithful attendance at the Bible School during the Year 1910," signed by E. L. Eidemiller, Supt. Deckled edges (rough cut), browned. Top edge gilt in good condition. Illustrator: Lawren S. Harris. Quantity Available: 1.
