About This Item
London: The Folio Society, 1992. Near Fine. The book is tight and square with solid hinges and bindings, and clean boards. Light rubbing to corners. The textblock has a faint small indentation on the half-title, else clean with no writing, bookplate, or markings, and not BCE, ex-library, or remaindered. Frontispiece plus full-color plates by Sarah Raphael. The dark blue card slipcase is near fine with light wear. 174 pages. 7½ " X 11" tall.
This book contains six very different writings by Frederic Raphael.
"Oedipus and Jocasta" — a one-page poem; "Of Gods and Men: A Film" — a tale of greed, corruption, torture, infanticide, cannibalism, and almost every other sin conceived; "Narcissus and Echo" — a nine-page poem that retells the myth; "The Story of Daedalus" — a 30-page story of Daedalus now set in the 20th century; "The Labors of Herakles" — starts with a scene of Herakles killing family followed by a 20-page poem describing the labors forced upon Herakles in penance for his sins; and "The Bacchae: As a Catalogue Raisonné" — 23 disjointed vignettes set in modern times that describe various aspects of apocalyptic decadence.
