About This Item

New York, NY: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1972. [Literary Autobiography] MASTER GALLEY PROOF. 94 loose sheets 65 x 20cm, roneo'd to one side only, with frequent corrections and notes by the author in thick red and blue ink, and by the printer in black ink and red pencil. Impossibly long sheets are folded once, with fold marks from a further contraction. Presented in a fleece-lined black quarter morocco clamshell box (38 x 23cm), with raised bands, gilt titles to red label on spine, and black cloth over sides. Moderate handling and toning, especially to first leaf, with some small chips and tears to margins, as might be expected from a working proof. Very good. A collection of autobiographical sketches about the writer's life, his cultural background, and the making of the film which made his story into a phenomenon far beyond the usual best-seller. From the library of Bill Targ (1907-1999), editor-in-chief of G.P. Putnam's Sons between 1968 and 1978.
