About This Item

New York: Robert O. Ballou. Very Good-. 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; 325 pages; 1932 Robert O. Ballou, New York. HC 1st edition. Snugly bound in original light green cloth with publisher's black top stain still solid. Notoriously light sensitive cloth is toned at spine but to a lesser degree than usual with fading to tan / green and not brown. Gilt lettering at spine dulled but still legible. Just a hint of toning to cloth at cover edges. Green on white pictorial endpages and green pictorial vignette on title page by Mahlon Blaine. Of 1498 copies printed, only 598 were bound and sold. (Goldstone A3a) Please note that while there are facsimile dust jackets that may be purchased to pair with this book, it is not our practice to include these with our books, as in general they are used to camoflauge flaws and dress up lower grade books. Such facsimile jackets are usually available for about $20. We will leave that matter to you, kind reader. VG- thus .

Synopsis

To a God Unknown is a novel by John Steinbeck, first published in 1933. The book was Steinbeck's second novel (after his unsuccessful Cup of Gold), the title taken from a hymn excerpt of the Rig Veda's Book X. Steinbeck found To a God Unknown extremely difficult to write; taking him roughly five years to complete, the novella proved more time-consuming than either East of Eden or The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck's longest novels.
