About This Item

London England: Secker & Warburg, 1957. The author's first novel. This is Indian country. Across the arroyo the thin high wail of a lonely singer re-echoes back off the dark mountains. Deep in this country, in the great house of petrified wood which their father had built 100 years before, lived two brothers, George and Alexander Bowman. For George the country and the Indians, whom he loved and understood, were his whole life. But his beautiful young wife Perrette, whom he had brought to Indian country, grew restless when the novelty wore off; and Alexander was restless too, with a yearning to travel and the itch to be a writer. The Indians, wiser than George, saw this. But their warnings fell on deaf ears, and all the greater was the shock when Alexander and Perrette ran away together. What happened to these two strongly contrasted brothers, how the one deteriorated with success, and how the other, left behind with the Indians, grew with their help out of bitterness to serenity, is the backbone to Mr. Eastlake's deeply compelling novel. Its special distinction, however, lies in the author's extraordinary comprehension and sympathy with the Indians, who people this wide, fierce, lovely, wondrous land. They take George Bowman under their friendly wing. Made for laughter, they make us laugh, and wonder, too. They come, in fact, to dominate the book. Foxing to end pages and some to edges. Very slight wear and tear and slight foxing to D/J but a very good copy.. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardback.
