About This Item

1939. Jo Daviess County, IL, and especially the City of Galena, is the focus of this reprint of the hard-to-find booklet: Glamorous Galena and Jo Daviess County, written by Richard Gear Hobbs, and originally published 1939. The 78-page spiral bound 8.5" x 11" booklet is printed on 60# bond paper with the front cover protected with a vinyl sheet. Jo Daviess is the highest county in the state, giving it the nickname of "Little Swizerland of Illinois." Following a brief overview, topics include Indian Days, Pioneer Days, Pick and Shovel Days, Steamboat Days, and Museum Days. There's a look at a noted resident of Galena: Ulysses S. Grant. In addition, many other Union officers came from Galena. Other topics include: Churches and Schools, Historical and Personal notes, and Galena as "an Artists Town." Included is a map of downtown Galena (1937) and a tour of points of interest; a look at nearby places; a chronology of events from 1778 to 1939; and two hand drawn maps. Pictures include: the old Custom House, Black Hawk War Stockage, Monument at the site of the Old Block House, Main Street, a panoramic view from Prospect Street, a house with many steps, Boats at Galena Wharf, the E.B. Washburne Home, Dowling House, David Sheean Home, the Grant home and statue, Galena High School, and 8 churches. The booklet does not include biographies, but it does mention a number of early residents -- the Furlong family, James G. Soulard, Samuel Hughlett, Darius Hunkins, Daniel Wann, the Rawlins family, Charles Hempstead, John Meusel, Capt. Hezekiah H. Gear and many others. Since our booklets are produced directly from the original vintage materials there are occasionally smudges, underlines or other marks which could not be deleted without damaging the type. In such cases we have chosen readibility as our primary goal. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb . New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11". Private Press.
