About This Item

New York: McDowell, Obolensky, 1958. This is a Near Fine copy, the Second Printing (Stated) of the "Revised Edition" of Donleavy's classic first novel. It was originally published in Paris by Olympia Press (with whom Donleavy contended legally for many years until his ultimate triumph). Although this is the First American Edition, it was edited to avoid censorship problems. Today it is hard to credit that this great work of literature should have been deemed obscene in any way. Black cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 327 pages. The dustjacket, an attractive design by Alfred Manso, is Very Good Plus: unclipped but showing some edgewear along the margins, mainly head of the spine, where there is a 1/4" chip. The red colour, which is prone to fading, is still quite bright. A very respectable copy of this classic tale. In an archival plastic protector.l. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good Plus. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

Feckless, unwashed, charming, penurious Sebastian Balfe Dangerfield, Trinity College Law student, Irish American with an English Accent, maroon in the ould country and dreaming of dollars and ready women, stumbles from the public house to the pawnbrokers, murmuring delusive enticements in the ear of any girl who'll listen, in delirious search of freedom, wealth, and the recognition he feels is his due. Lyrical and ribald, illuminating, poignant and hugely entertaining, The Ginger Man is a work of authentic comic genius.
