About This Item

New York: McDowell, Obolensky, 1958. Irish-American author Donleavy's picaresque rogue Sebastian Dangerfield has entered the canon of the best literature of the 20th Century. A high spot indeed; and Donleavy's own literary adventures are themselves quite fascinating. This is the First American Edition (stated First Printing), "Revised" from the issues by Olympia Press and Neville Spearman, but not yet the text Donleavy wanted. Very close to a Fine copy; the red topstain is a bit faded, but the text is clean and fresh and the black cloth binding is unmarked by any defect. The famous red dustjacket was designed by Alfred Manso, and his design is also blindstamped on the cover. Also in Near Fine condition. The red color is still bright, with hardly any fading on the spine; tiny bit of edgewear. Really one of the best copies seen recently. In an archival plastic protector.. First American Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

Feckless, unwashed, charming, penurious Sebastian Balfe Dangerfield, Trinity College Law student, Irish American with an English Accent, maroon in the ould country and dreaming of dollars and ready women, stumbles from the public house to the pawnbrokers, murmuring delusive enticements in the ear of any girl who'll listen, in delirious search of freedom, wealth, and the recognition he feels is his due. Lyrical and ribald, illuminating, poignant and hugely entertaining, The Ginger Man is a work of authentic comic genius.
