GIDEON WELLES (1802-1878). Welles was Secretary of the Navy during and after the Civil War. LS. 6pgs. November 10, 1847. Bureau of Provisions and Clothing. A letter signed “Gideon Welles” as Chief of the Navy’s Bureau of Provisions and Clothing and written in anther hand. Welles wrote by Secretary of the Navy John G. Mason, reporting estimated expenses for the Navy’s provisions and clothing: “I have the honor to transmit herewith, in compliance with your instructions, estimates for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1849, and statement of contracts entered into by the Bureau, under the acts of April 21, 1808 & 3 March 1809; also, abstracts of the offers to furnish such Nava Supplies as come under the cognizance of this Bureau, and the transportation thereof…”. The letter goes on to also mention purchasing “insoluble rubber clothing” and meat contractors that have not held up their end of an agreement. Welles, here reporting to the Secretary of the Navy, would later hold that same position himself. In fine condition, with very minor wear.
