About This Item
London; Edward Arnold. 1905, 1905. Hard Cover. Second impression. Octavo, pp. xi, [1], 270. With four black and white illustrated plates by James Mcbryde, as called for. Bound in the original publishers' fawn linen cloth over boards, crimson fillets across boards with black titles to upper board and spine. Cloth slightly soiled with small split to joint, hinges starting but holding, some light scattered foxing throughout. Lacking front free endpaper. Contents clean and free of inscriptions or annotations. James' first collection of ghost stories inspired by his academic interests in medievalism, antiquarianism and bibliography, including the frequently anthologised stories "The Mezzotint", "Oh, Whistle and I'll Come to you my Lad", and "Canon Alberic's Scrap Book". A canonical work of supernatural literature which is as haunting to modern audiences over a century later.
Synopsis
Ghost Stories of an Antiquary is the title of M. R. James' first collection of ghost stories, published in 1904 (some had previously appeared in magazines). Some later editions under this title contain both the original collection and its successor, More Ghost Stories (1911), combined in one volume. Montague Rhodes James (1862–1936) was a medieval scholar; Provost of King's College, Cambridge.
