Carpenter's uncommon third novel, not reprinted except for a Pocket Books paperback the following year. With a blurb by Richard Brautigan, one of Carpenter's closest friends: "In microscopically-accurate detail Getting Off searches through the emotional odds and ends of an American marriage that has just turned into a pile of junk. This is a very brave book about love.
