About This Item

Berlin: Wiking Verlag, 1936. Two consecutive issues of this English language German magazine published from 1931-1943 by Wiking Verlag, an SS-affiliated publisher. Although sympathetic to National Socialism, the magazine's aim was to provide "unbiased information on many topics of mutual interest to Germany and other nations, [to] help further international, cultural and peaceful progress." Articles celebrate German culture, industry, sports, nature and general life.

Featured content for issue 3 includes "In Praise of Wood-Engraving" by Alfred Zacharias, with many terrific examples; "German Technique and the Development of Safety in Aviation" by Wolfgang von Gronau; "The Saga of Selma Lagerlöf" by W. Debus; "Social Problems in the Ruhr Mining District" by Dr. Ernst Hartwig; "The Sword of Heros von Borcke" by Prof. Ernst Beutler; "Subsistence Homesteads in Germany" by W. C. Kessler; etc. Issue 4 includes "Dreams of Home: The Four Seasons in Germany" by Heinrich Hauser, with beautiful photographs; "French Guns on the Rhine" by Frederick Edwardes (with map); "There Are Also Automobiles...Old Byways and Modern Highways" by Dr. Alfred Happ; "The Fuggerei: A Model Settlement 400 Years Old" by Eleanor P. Mason; "Experiments in Cooperation: A German-English Labour Camp" by Heinz A. Heinz; "Hiking Through the Rhoen Hills" by Catherine Goetsch-Trevelyan; etc.

Stapled wrappers (9 ¼" x 12 ¼"), 32; 24 p., illus. Wear, rubbing and creasing to wrappers, with some chipping to the bottom front corner of issue 3. All issues uncommon in the trade; less than a dozen institutions in OCLC holding any issue.
