George Gemiste Plethon est ne dans la seconde moitie du quatorzieme siecle, probablement vers 1360, dans une grande famille sacerdotale de Constantinople. Nous ignorons tout des conditions dans lesquelles il a fait ses etudes. Il a probablement ete l' eleve du "platonicien" Demetrius Kydones. Une lettre de Georges Scholarios adressee a la princesse du Peloponnese, nous apprend que Plethon apres ses etudes, quitte Constantinople pour le cour d' Andrinople. C' est la qu' en pays barbare il recoit aupres du juif Elisha un "enseignement etranger" [...] Cet ouvrage a ete presente pour l' obtension du Diplome de l' Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Ve section). Je tiens a exprimer ici ma profonde reconaissance a Monsieur le Professeur M. Tardieu qui m'a si genereusement guidee et encouragee tout au long de ce travail.
