About This Item

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran and Company, 1943. Hardcover. Good. Later printing. Octavo. 342pp. Illustrated. Blind and gilt stamped gray cloth. Small stain on page 173, color image of Carver (taken from the dust jacket) taped and glue onto front pastedown, spine ends and corners lightly bumped, some light soiling, good only lacking the dust jacket. An interesting association copy being George M. Houser's copy with a gift inscription from his parents on the front fly. George and his wife Jean's names penned in Jean's hand on the front fly as well. George Houser helped found, in 1953, the American Committee on Africa (ACOA); from 1955-1981, he served as Executive Director of the ACOA and he also was Executive Director of The Africa Fund from 1966-1981. "At ACOA he spearheaded numerous campaigns supporting African struggles for liberation and independence... Since 1954 he... made over 30 trips to Africa. His support of liberation movements led him to develop close ties with many African leaders... He served on the Advisory Committee of the African Activist Archive Project..." [per Wikipedia].
