About This Item
LYON: ANTOINE BESSON,, 1683 12mo. Collation: a6, A G6. [10], 84 printed pages. Complete with one folding engraved plate, & woodcut diagrams in the text. Ownership signatures on all four endpapers (front & back). Very small marginal stain from title page to the folding plate, another on pages 19-34 & a small marginal stain on the last few leaves. 8.5 x 15 cm. Contemporary speckled calf, red edges, spine in six compartments with raised bands (slightly worn at head and tail); binding very slightly stained & worn at extremities. This pockrt sized volume is devoted mainly to the conversion, by arithmetic and geometric means, between various types of French measurements used in surveying and construction. The major French measure, the toise, was about two meters (six feet) in length but varied from city to city. Additional conversions of shorter lengths (equivalent to about a foot) are also considered, and the work contains small tables equating various measures. There is a figure of a protractor and a plane scale, by Claude Naulot (1681-1700), a Lyon merchant and author of a number of works on tariffs and measurement. Provenance: Fontaine H. du Mallimal. This edition is not recorded by Hoock & Jeannin (II/C41.1), who describe one printed at Lyon: F. Roux, 1683 (copy in Bibliothèque nationale de France). One copy of the present edition located by WorldCat in the Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon; it seems to be otherwise unknown. Tomash & Williams C212. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.
