About This Item

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1947. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Very Good-. Tom Lovell. 8vo. Pp. 275. Bound in taupe cloth with green lettering and tan decorative flourish on front board and spine. Light soiling to cloth, with age-toning to edges. In the pictorial dust jacket that shows light edge-wear, notably to head of spine. Price of $2.75 intact on front flap. Adapted to the screen by Moss Hart, Elia Kazan directing, with John Garfield, Dorothy McGuire and Gregory Peck starring, and also featuring a very young Dean Stockwell. The Tom Lovell dust jacket illustration evokes the era's tough-guy-journalist mystique, in this instance, a reporter who for six months passes as Jewish, only to suffer indignities of poor service, hotel rooms suddenly unavailable, schoolyard bullies who taunt his son. In sum, an indictment of anti-Semitic strains current in post-WWII America. Dust jacket is now enclosed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
