Born in France in 1820, he came to Texas with Henri Castro in 1844 and lived in Castroville where he became acquainted with the Indians of the area by walking from Castroville to San Antonio. He resided in San Antonio until his death in 1906. Pronounced Jonteel. Paintings include El Alamo in 1844; Fandango ; Spanish Dance, San Antonio; Camp of the Lipans, Comanches on the War Path.
