About This Item
Sydney: Australian Biographical and Genealogical Record (ABGR) / Society of Australian Genealogists (SAG), 1988. 1st ed.. Hardback large octavo, no jacket as issued, very good condition, red cloth cover (gilt lettering), frontispiece photo, some foxing top edge, cover corners little bumped, minor edgewear. Heavy (1.5 Kg), and not available for postage to destinations outside Australia. 780 pp. (This copy: Hardback, no jacket, very good condition, 1988.) A transcription by Carol J. Baxter of the 1822 muster, which provides an unequalled record of all settlers (free settlers and convicts) in New South Wales at the end of the first generation of European settlement. Includes the occupation of each settler, family groupings, and settlers to which individual convicts were assigned. The year 1822 saw the end of an era, with the departure of Major-General Lachlan Macquarie, the longest serving Governor of the colony. The 1822 musters are very important records, reflecting the nature of the colony at the end of his governorship, through the circumstances of the individuals residing in the colony. The muster provides confirmation of, or sometimes the only reference to, other relationships as well. Details of husbands, wives, sons and daughters are frequently recorded - however, the muster also includes references to grandchildren, nephews and nieces, brothers and sisters and even adopted children. This book will be a good reference for anyone with an interest in Australian history and genealogy. First edition stated.
