About This Item
London: Printed for J. Brambles, A. Meggitt, and J. Waters, by H. Mozley, Market-Place Gainsborough, 1805. 12mo (in 6s), pp. [vi], 202, woodcut image of Gay on title-page, and 66 other woodcuts, one for each fable, contemporary quarter roan, marbled boards; tear in lower margin of C1 (pp. 13 - 14), with slight loss of text in lower margin of verso, some headlines closely shaved with partial loss of numbers, binding very shabby, with partial loss of leather on spine, but text clean. Illustrations of Gay's Fables from this period are hardly uncommon, and I am reasonably sure that the woodcuts derive from those by Thomas Berwick. Uncommon: copies located in BL; Kansas and Harvard in the USA; King's College in Nova Scotia
