About This Item

New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 1976. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.. First edition of Forché's first poetry collection, inscribed to fellow poet Denise Levertov. Carolyn Forché is a multifaceted poet, educator, and activist, whose politically-engaged poetry blends the personal with larger concepts and global events. Exploring themes of kinship, GATHERING THE TRIBES traverses rural life, motherhood, and Sapphic desire. The collection won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award in 1975, when Forché was 24, and landed her a publishing deal. This copy bears an inscription to fellow poet Denise Levertov, who would later call Forché "a poet who's doing what I want to do" (PoetryDispatch). A warm association between two major American poets. 8'' x 5''. Original brown cloth binding with gilt lettering. Original pictorial dust jacket, unclipped ($6.00), illustrated by Arleen Targan. 58 pages. Inscribed by the author in ink to half-title: "For Denise, / I have long / wanted to meet you - / May I know / you someday / Carolyn Forché." Dust jacket with a few small spots of soil, light sunning to spine and mild toning to rear. A bit of edgewear to binding and one or two spots of soil to margins. Sound and bright.
