The author assumed her writer mother's name as her pen name and legal name after her early demise when Ward was only eight years old. She produced many religious writings, of which The Gates Ajar, was the most famous. This novel "brought comfort to thousands with its gentle and human conception of a life after death, softening the stern theology of the time" (American Authors 1600-1900, ed.
