About This Item
Gardening General . 1st. Ed. Pub. Chicago : The Gardening Company. 1893-1894. Two volumes (comprising all 48 journals) with b/w. photographs throughout, plus illus. and plans (of for example greenhouses), adverts and indexes. 4to. Hardback. Contents nr. fine. Contemporary half morocco over marbled boards in good to vg. condition. Very scarce. A fascinating period insight into gardening in the United States. With correspondents from around the USA, Chicago produced its own gardening magazine (fortnightly) edited by William Falconer. Falconer was born in Scotland (b. 1850), trained at Kew, then emigrated to the USA in 1874. The aim of Gardening was to be practical, unpretentious and to teach the plain, ungarnished truth about every horticultural subject.
