About This Item

Beatrice, Nebraska: Sonderegger Nurseries and Seed House, 1931. Tall 8vo. 7 x 10.25 in. 127, [1] pp. 100s of text illustrations, photo illustrations. Colour-lithograph illustrated softcovers with cover art of Richared Delicious Apple & J.H. Hale Peach on front cover, vegetables on the back include Tomatoes, Peppers, Muskmelons (uniform interior toning, some edgewear, creasing to spine), still VG copy, from the library of Millard Armstrong (1874-1958), longtime Portland, Oregon millwright, carpenter, home builder, and later high school teacher, and Albany, OR dairy farmer. First edition of this well-illustrated seed catalogue issued in the depths of the Great Depression, with the introduction explaining how their nursery cuts out the traveling salesmen to sell direct. Carl Sonderegger (b. 1856) immigrated to Jefferson County, Nebraska in 1875 from Switzerland, and by 1886 had set up a large 120 acre nursery farm. In 1900 he moved the operations to Beatrice, Nebraska where it became one of the most successful nursery operations in the Midwest. See: Dobbs, History of Gage County, Nebraska, pp. 376-378.
