FIRST EDITION circa 1897 (date from Bodleian Library), 4to, 235 x 180 mm, 9¼ x 7 inches, pretty chromolithograph frontispiece showing children playing Blind Man's Buff, numerous black and white illustrations, some full page, a small one of cats by Louis Wain, some by William Foster, many by Evelyn Stuart Hardy, some signed A.D. and many unsigned. Victorian children's pastimes: indoor games, tricks and puzzles, outdoor games, occupations, collections, and the care of pets. In the original publisher's dark green cloth lettered gilt on upper cover and spine, bevelled edges, large coloured illustration to upper cover of a girl playing Blind Man's Buff, a gold chain and pendant round her neck, all edges gilt, 192 pages. Gilt faded on spine, spine slightly wrinkled, slightly rubbed at head and tail of spine with minute nicks, corners very slightly rubbed, no inscriptions, contents very clean. A very good plus copy.
