FIRST EDITION 1892, 8vo, approximately 220 x 140 mm, 8½ x 5 inches, 11 mounted albumen photographs including portrait of the author, plus a further 7 plates (3 with colour) and numerous illustrations in the text, pages: iv, 1-366, [2], bound in the original publisher's pictorial cloth, gilt lettering and gilt portrait of Queen Hatasu on upper cover, gilt vignette to lower cover, captioned Ludus Latrunculorum, gilt rules and lettering to spine with tiny gilt vignette, original black endpapers, loose advert still present. Slight rubbing to binding, foot of spine bumped, slight lean, small patch of pale browning to blank endpapers, small pale brown spot underneath the portrait and preceding page, fore-edge and lower edge foxed, no inscriptions. A very good bright, tight clean copy in the original gilt decorated cloth. Games described include those of the ancient Egyptians and Romans, Chaturanga, Indian chess, including forms of the game of chess played by the Chinese, Turkish, Japanese and Burmese, Draughts, Backgammon and Magic Squares with numerous variations.
