Description:
Philadelphia: Oswald Train, Publisher. Fine in Very Good+ dj. (c.1969). First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [nice and clean, no discernible wear to book; jacket has a teensy-tiny nick at top of front panel, faint soiling/browning to spine]. Half a dozen Victorian-era detective stories, co-authored by R. Austin Freeman in collaboration with his close friend, Dr. John James Pitcairn. Unlike the preceding volume of Pringle stories (which was a reprint of a collection originally published in 1903), this volume is the first book printing of six previously-uncollected tales. As the jacket blurb explains: "These are the last six Romney Pringle stories -- there are no more." Contains two short introductory pieces: "Of Romney Pringle," by August Derleth; and "Clifford Ashdown: A Retrospect," by Norman Donaldson. .

Description:
Oswald Train, Philadelphia, 1969 An unusual copy of the first edition: unbound signatures (never bound) wrapped in the dustcover. 7 5/8 x 5 1/4 inches, 216 pp. Very good. "The world of Romney Pringle has long since disappeared. They were the days of few telephones or automobiles, and the electric light was still new. The Wright Brothers, Professor Langley, and others, were still experimenting with their crude flying machines. A cab was a horse-drawn hansom cab, and Romney's favorite mode of transportation was the bicycle. Romney Pringle was a rogue, a man who lived by his wits --- no Robin Hood, certainly! But he was not vicious, and his victims were con-men, thieves, and the like. There is a tongue-in-cheek type of humor in these stories, so lacking in the usual crime story. These are the last six Romney Pringle stories --- there are no more. The Submarine Boat. The Kimberley Fugitive. The Silk Worms of Florence. The box of Specie. The Silver Ingots. The House of Detention. Biographical… Read More
