Simpkin, Marshall & Co; J Garnett, London; Windermere, 1863. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Blue covers with gilt lettering and decoration and with bevelled edges are lightly rubbed at corners. Splits in paper covering internal hinges and some plates are detached (see below). There is no map present. There is a previous owner's name on the front end-paper and a date of 1885 and an ink stamp of the same name on the following blank leaf. Pages and plates are clean. Text is framed in red, decorated chapter capitals. Typographaeo Windermeriensi. Illustrations (photographs) are both of the Abbey itself and also of prints, probably engravings. Most have tissue prtective leaves and are titled: Frontis - The Western Tower (from a print); Across The Sands (from a print); Hotel and Pleasure Grounds (detached together with tissue leaf); Remains of the Sacristy and South Chapel; Monks at Mass (from a Print); Interior of the Chapter House; The Site of the Kitchens, Lavatories etc; The View of the Transept (from a print); Remains of the Sedilia; Interior of the Transepts, From the South; Entrance to the Chapter House; North-West View (from a print); North View of the Church (detached)(from a print); plus 4 untitled non-phographic plates.
