Dad's Army has become one of the classic television comedy series since it began nearly thirty years ago (now 1996).Bill Pertwee, the excitable Chief Air Raid Warden Hodges, was associated with it for the full nine-year run of the show which included nearly 70 radio episodes,a full length feature film and the stage musical.Bill was born 21,July 1926 and in his 70 years has farmed, helped build Spitfires, acted as a baggage boy on the 1946 Indian cricket tour of Britain and has worked as a window cleaner. In 1954 he offered Beryl Reid some comedy material and ended up on stage in her Revue; since then he has been a full-time professional actor. His remarkably varied career has included over a thousand radio broadcasts - including cult classics 'Beyond Our Ken' and 'Round the Horne' - television appearances in 'Jackonory,' 'Chance in a Million', 'Blankety Blank','Wogan',several appearances in 'Pebble Mill' programmes and four series of the BBC's 'You Rang M'Lord',written by the creators od Dad's Army,Jimmy Perry and David Croft. His theatre appearances include several seasons in London's West End in See How They Run,Worzel Gummidge, several Ray Cooney farces including the record-breaking Run For Your Wife,in which Bill also appeared in Canada. He has also toured exclusively in various stage plays in this country including Bernard Shaw's Candida.Other appearances in London have been at the Palladium and seasons at the famous Windmill Theatre, and his pantomimes with his old friends Roy Hudd and Jack Tripp are legendary. His autobiography is as humorous, entertaining and varies as you would expect from a man who has rubbed shoulders with the great names of theatre and comedy, like Spike Milligan,Kenneth Williams,Kenneth Horne, Michael Denison,Derek Nimmo,Evelyn Lays,Donald Sinden,George Burns and Sammy Davis Jnr to name but a few - and who has played cricket with Peter May, Colin Cowdrey, Bill Edrich and Freddie Trueman. In 1979 the man who had problems writing his own name accurately before the age of 12 turned to writing books. His first was a history of seaside entertainment,'Promenades and Pierrots';his second,'By Royal Command',was a history of the theatre's association with the Royal Family. In 1989 came 'Dad's Army - The Making of a Television Legend', an instant bestseller which reprinted and went into paperback.'The Station Now Standing',about Britain's colourful railway stations, was published in 1991 and his fifth book was 'Stars in Battledress',about forces' personnel who entertained on the stage during WW2. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its compensation rates too!
