Albuquerque, NM: University of New Mexico, 1969. Reprint of 1883 edition. Trade paperback. Very good. xiii, 329, [1] pages. Introduction by Philip D. Jordan. Cover has slight wear and soiling. James William Steele was born in Grandview, Illinois on 9 November 1840. When war broke out in 1861, he joined the 38th Indiana Infantry Volunteers, Co. H out of New Albany. After receiving a major wound and being discharged from the 38th Indiana Infantry, Steele volunteered again and was commissioned as a second lieutenant with the 43rd Regiment of U.S. Colored Troops, receiving another wound. Returning to Topeka after the war, Steele took up the study of law. He spent some time in New Mexico and Arizona as a captain in the U.S. Cavalry. He helped establish the Kansas Magazine in 1871 and was its editor by 1873. From 1874 to 1877, Steele served as consul at the Matanzas, Cuba consulate. Thereafter he moved to Chicago, Illinois, editing a magazine until his death there in 1905. A collection of stories showing the the Army soldier's frontier life, with a humorist's cutting observations on human nature. This is a reprint of the second edition, with five new sketches added.
