About This Item

Oxford, Geoffrey Cumberledge and OUP, [1949]. 8vo. Original cloth with dust-wrappers (not price-clipped), map endpapers with route in red; pp. xiv, 369, plates after photographs; wrappers with spotting and a few short marginal flaws, otherwise very good. Uncommon first edition. This is the story of a ride across Northern India in the winter of 1946-47 on the eve of independence and partition. Darling began his journey in Peshawar and ended, 1,400 miles futher south, in Jubbulpore where he paid a visit to his friend Mahatma Gandhi. The author had been a member of the Indian Civil Service and gathered the mood and opinions of the population on the impeding social and political change. He had been considered as some sort of a maverick, as he sought to improve the life of the rural Subjects of the British Empire.
