About This Item

Chicago: Coalition to Free Moses Mayekiso, 1988. Handbill. 8.5x11 inch demonstration handbill; in very good condition. Mayekiso, a prominent activist in the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, was arrested in 1986 under the apartheid-era Internal Security Act and was eligible for the death penalty for treason. After both national and international outcry the South African government released Mayekiso on bail in 1988 and he was acquitted in 1989, after which he became a leader in the South African Communist Party and in the South African National Civic Organisation.
