About This Item

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1898. Vellum. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5.5". Not Stated. A smartly bound edition of Margaret Oliphant's biography of Francis of Assisi. Scarce work. With an illustrated frontispiece. A biography of Francis of Assisi, originally Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, an Italian mystic and Catholic friar who founded the brotherhood of the Franciscans. Considered one of the most venerated figures in Christianity, he was canonised by Pope Gregory IX as of 1228. Written by Margaret Oliphant, under the pen name Mrs Oliphant, a Scottish novelist and historical writer. Bound in full vellum with gilt decoration. Externally, very smart with light shelf wear and the odd small mark to the board. Minor discolouration to the vellum as is typical with ageing. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good Indeed
