A look at the native people of the Arctic region, the Inuit (Eskimos) and the Sami (Lapps), and how for thousands of years they survived in a hostile environment through rigourous discipline and strong communal bonds. This community and bonding has been destroyed (or all but) and nothing of value to replace it, except disease, liquor and firearms, with the advent of European exploration, missionaries, early warning military defences etc., etc. The author goes into this destruction of the native peoples of the polar region and the cost not only to them, but to the world.
