London: John Murray, 1862. Hardcover. Good. xi, 468, 32 p. 23 cm. B&w drawings. Fold-out map towards rear. Brown cloth with black and gold impessing. Corners bumped. Respined with original spine overlaid. New endpapers. Publisher's presentation inscription on a front page. Occasional thumbing. Rear map is jutting on a bit and is slightly foxed and torn. "So little is yet known about British Columbia and Vancouver Island that the Author hopes his experience of four years spent in the survey and exploration of both these Colonies, may be found of interest." The author tells of his voyage to the west coast, describes the colonies and their inhabitants, and summarizes the provinces' mineral wealth. Appendix and index.

First edition, 8vo, pp. [iii]-xi, [1], 468; wood-engraved frontispiece and vignette title page, 17 wood-engraved plates and a folding map; original brown cloth, spine ends chipped, hinges cracked; ex-Northern Pacific Railway Co. with small rubberstamp on the flyleaf and a small accession label at the base of the spine, but no other markings; good copy. Field 1047: "Several engravings illustrative of aboriginal life and two chapters devoted to that subject, form a sufficient claim of this volume to place in a collection of works relating to Indian history." TPL 4076: "This work is based on his trips along the coast and inland; it includes also extracts from the journals and letters to the Church Missionary Society by William Duncan, a Church of England missionary stationed at Fort Simpson and elsewhere."
