About This Item

London: Grant Richards, 1900. First edition. Very good plus.. First edition of this delightful book of trades printed by one of the leading publishers of the Golden Age -with beautiful illustrations by F. D. Bedford. FOUR AND TWENTY TOILERS represents the intersection of a pair of Golden Age greats: Edmund Evans and F. D. Bedford. When TOILERS was published, Bedford's career was at its zenith, and his "popularity rivalled that of H. R. Millar and Charles Robinson" (Dalby, 56). Evans's printing processes translated his art into book form beautifully. Cornelia Meigs praised the book's prescient subject matter and style, calling it "ahead of its time" and likening it to the work of Caldecott (401). Lovely. 9'' x 12''. Original cloth-backed pictorial boards. Illustrated in color. 108 pages, printed one side only. Small bookseller's label to front pastedown, Henry Sotheran Ltd. Early pencil date to front flyleaf, "27th Febr. 1904". Binding with some edgewear, boards with light rubbing; corners and spine ends somewhat bumped. Offsetting to endpapers. Tight.
