[np, 1845. Illustrated broadside, 9-3/8" x 13". Attractively framed. Near Fine.

"An illustrated broadside reviling four Rhode Island Whigs who broke party ranks to support a popular movement to free imprisoned radical Thomas Wilson Dorr... The broadside's author alleges political opportunism in the alliance of [left to right] Charles Jackson, Samuel F. Man, James F. Simmons, and Lemuel H. Arnold with Democrats to support a 'liberation' ticket in the spring elections of 1845. This notice, evidently published after the April canvass, laments the election of 'an obscure individual like Polk' and 'a pompous, self-conceited man like Jackson' as well as 'foreigners, ignorant, barbarous and uncivilized,' 'radicals, disorganisers and abolitionists assuming to be jurists' in general.... The 'Four Traitors' are crudely caricatured. Jackson holds a proclamation of liberation, probably the act of June 1845 pardoning Dorr. Samuel Man is depicted as obese, sitting in a chair and holding an infant. Simmons thumbs his nose at Man, and his own coattails are in turn held by Lemuel Arnold." [Reilly]

Description:
Providence: Charles Burnett, 1848. 56pp, stitched, original printed wrappers [minor extremity wear, spine wear]. Else Near Fine. The constitutionality of Rhode Island's Charter government, as well as the Dorr Constitution, reached the Supreme Court after Martin Luther, a Dorr "insurgent," challenged the authority of the existing Rhode Island government to declare martial law and arrest him. He argued that the Charter had been abolished by the Dorr Constitution and that, indeed, the insurgents were authorized to overthrow the existing government "by force of arms." Whipple provides a detailed history of the Charter government, the Constitutions purportedly superseding the Charter, and of the Dorr Rebellion. His argument opposes "the wild, visionary and revolutionary theories" of the Dorrites. Webster argues that bedrock "principles of public liberty" prevent the establishment of a new constitution by extra-constitutional means. Although "the will of the people must prevail...there must be some… Read More

Boston: Tappan & Dennet, 1844. Wrappers. Octavo. 132 pages. Very Good+. Original printed salmon-colored wraps over sewn binding, with minor edge rubs, a diagonal crease to lower fore corner of front cover, and short separations of covers at spine ends. Some foxing to first and last leaves.. Frustrated by Rhode Island's outdated landed property ownership requirement for voting, and by the inability to change the system legislatively, Thomas Dorr and his supporters essentially tried to set up a separate state government and capture the arsenal at Providence. These efforts were thwarted by Governor Samuel Ward King and the Charter government. Dorr was arrested and tried for treason. This is a record of the trial testimony and verdict. Despite his setbacks, Dorr's efforts resulted in Rhode Island's adoption of a new constitution in 1842 which removed the property restriction and otherwise greatly liberalized voting requirements in the state.

[Providence, 1843. Broadside, 8-1/4" x 9-1/4." Two columns of text printed beneath boldly printed title. Mild uniform toning, Very Good plus. Signed in type at the end by Cyrus Butler of Brown & Ives. "Dated at Providence, March 29, 1843." A contemptuous refutation of the claim of "the Dorrites, that the State is indebted on account of the late insurrection, $500,000-- for expenses of the Quarter Master's and Commissary's Departments, and for money borrowed of Messrs. Brown & Ives and Cyrus Butler, of Providence." In fact, however, "the true statement of the costs of the Dorrite war" is only "the sum of $5000." The difference between $5,000 and $500,000 is "what the Dorrites will claim and have of the State themselves, if you give them the power by supporting the falsely called Democratic Ticket." Supporting data from the Commissary General and Quarter-Master General demolish the false claims. DeSimone & Schofield 1. OCLC records six locations under three accession numbers as of July 2022.

Description:
[Providence?, 1844. Small oblong printed certificate, 2.5" x 5.75". Printed on light stock. Clean. Fine. An ephemeral document from the Dorr Rebellion, which began as a peaceful attempt to replace the archaic, undemocratic Rhode Island Charter with a written constitution broadening the suffrage. In 1842 frustrated Dorrites took up arms and were met by force. For participating in the uprising, Martin Luther was arrested in 1842 by Luther Borden, a militiaman. Claiming that Borden acted without authority, Luther took the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. He argued that the Dorr Constitution displaced the Charter because the Charter flunked the U.S. Constitution's Article Four, Section Four, which guarantees to every State "a Republican Form of Government." But in Luther v. Borden, 48 U.S. 1 [1849], Chief Justice Taney ducked the issue by calling it a 'political question,' and thus out of bounds for the Court to decide. [Providence?, 1844. 15, [1 blank] pp. Caption title [as issued]. A few light fox marks, disbound, Very Good plus. The Address is signed at page 12 in type by Nehemiah Knight, formerly Rhode Island's Governor, U.S. Senator, and delegate to its Constitutional Convention; William Sprague, John Whipple, and twenty other leaders of Rhode Island's established order. Opposing Thomas Dorr and his "People's Constitution," they explain the fairness of the officially proposed Constitution, the unreasonable stance of the Dorrites, and their willingness to plunge the State "into all the horrors of civil war." They delineate the utter absence of authority for Dorr to exercise "the office of Governor under a pretended Constitution," describe the insurrection which he led and the "grossest frauds" which Dorrites perpetrated in the votes for the Dorr Constitution, and the observance of all legal formalities in Dorr's trial and conviction.
