About This Item

London: Faber and Faber, 1944. Hardcover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included. London, Faber and Faber, 1944 [first English edition]/ 1943 (first collected edition). Octavo, 44 pages, printed on translucent wove paper watermarked 'A. Millbourn & Co | British Handmade'. Original tan cloth lettered in gilt on the spine; top edge cut, leading and bottom deckle edges only lightly cut; covers slightly bowed; endpapers a little foxed, offset and cockled; light cockling to the bottom edge of the text block; contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper ('Mary | Christmas 1944'); a very good copy with the very good unclipped dustwrapper lightly marked and a little sunned on the spine, with minimal signs of silverfish activity (a few tiny patches of surface loss and one tiny hole). The first English edition of this important collection. The four poems were first published together in the American edition, published in May 1943. 'The four poems which make up this volume have all appeared separately: "Burnt Norton" first in 1936, "East Coker" in 1940, "The Dry Salvages" in 1941, and "Little Gidding" in 1942. The author, however, has always intended them to be published as one volume, and to be judged as a single work' (dustwrapper blurb).

Gallup A43b, giving a print run of 6000 copies of this edition.

Synopsis

The last major verse written by Nobel laureate T. S. Eliot, considered by Eliot himself to be his finest work   Four Quartets is a rich composition that expands the spiritual vision introduced in “The Waste Land.” Here, in four linked poems (“Burnt Norton,” “East Coker,” “The Dry Salvages,” and “Little Gidding”), spiritual, philosophical, and personal themes emerge through symbolic allusions and literary and religious references from both Eastern and Western thought. It is the culminating achievement by a man considered the greatest poet of the twentieth century and one of the seminal figures in the evolution of modernism.
