Four Programs From The South Jersey Institute, 1891 And 1892 -

Bridgeton, N.J.: South Jersey Institute, 1891. Near Fine. 4 programs, 3 of them printed on folded card (1 with gilt edges and 1 with embossed yellow birds on the front). The South Jersey Institute was opened in 1870 in Bridgeton, N.J., by the West New Jersey Baptist Association as a co-educational college preparatory school. It closed in 1907. The programs are for 1) a pupils' recital on Feb. 5, 1891, with 10 musical pieces listed; 2) a benefit for the South Jersey Institute's athletic association on April 7, 1891, with 6 selections, including a whistling solo by C. F. Mack, a Shakespearean medley with 7 actors, and an operetta; 3) a public meeting of the Philosophian Literary Society on Feb. 6, 1892, featuring spoken and musical performances a well as a debate on the question of whether intemperance is a greater menace to our government than anarchy; 4) a recital for graduation by Lizzie H. Stadler, assisted by various other musicians on May 11. Although no year is given for the last described program, it includes several of the same people named in the other programs. Also: a calling card from Debbie H. Stratton in an envelope with an 1890 George Washington issue without the corner triangles addressed to Paul H. Dormon at the South Jersey Institute, dated April 1891. Stratton and Dormon are both named in the 2nd program. Very scarce. In Near Fine Condition: exterior of 2 programs are lightly soiled; otherwise, clean and crisp.
