About This Item

Edinburgh: Edmonston and Douglas. Very Good+ with no dust jacket. 1868. First Edition. Hardcover. Original Russian Green cloth with Bright Gilt Titling to the spine. Overall excellent condition. Top edge Gilt. Remaining page fore-edges very lightly dusty, foxed and toned. All hinges tight . (xiv) + 496 pp + 1pp (publishers advert). Early Welsh manuscript material. A classic collection of Welsh Early Mediaeval, Later Mediaeval, Arthurian, mythic, and historical texts. This volume contains - 'Two Poems from the Cambridge Juvencus'; 'The Black Book of Carmarthen'; 'The Book of Aneurin'; 'The Book of Taliessin' (Taliesin) ; and 'The Red Book of Hergest'. All in early Welsh with some notes in English - These 'books' end at page 308, then a large block of 'Notes and Illustrations' in English (pages 311 to 452). Plus Appendices = 1. Bonhed Gwyr y Gogled yw Hyn and the English Translation on the opposite page; 2. Trioed Arthur ae Wyr, and English Translation on the opposite pages. Followed by the Full Index to the 2 volumes. The text includes 4 lovely colour (chromolithographic) plates - facsimiles of title pages of the 4 books. Plain Black endpapers, and a former owners' name, location and date (1903-4) on the second blank endpaper. Some small light pencil annotation scattered throughout the text but could easily be removed (I've left for now in case interesting to the buyer) and hardly noticable. A Very Clean, Tight and Bright copy - anyone out there with a similar VG Volume 1? Scarce in this Original form - sadly only the one volume - looking for love with volume 2...! . In English and (early) Welsh. See Images. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall .
