About This Item

London: Victor Gollancz. Pages begining to tan (common with this book), no inscriptions. The dust jacket is taken just-off fine by general handling. Although the book has an ISBN number and there is no indication (that I can see) on the book that it is anything other than a 1979 first by Golancz, it is offered and priced as a Book Club Edition due to the absence of a price on the unclipped dust jacket front flap. Weysprings Books is a member of the Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA) and subscribes to the Association's Code of Ethics. . Near Fine. Hardcover. First Thus. 1979.

Synopsis

The Fountains of Paradise is a Hugo and Nebula Award winning 1979 novel by Arthur C. Clarke. Set in the 22nd century, it describes the construction of a space elevator. This "orbital tower" is a giant structure rising from the ground and linking with a satellite in geostationary at the height of approximately 36,000 kilometers (approx. 22,300 miles). Such a structure would be used to raise payloads to orbit without having to use rockets, making it much more cost-effective.
