Chicago: The Open Court Publishing Compnay, 1902. First American Edition. Hardcover. Good+. 20 x 14 cm. Octavo. Errata slip, viii 143pp + 11pp publisher's ads. Translated into English by E. J. Townsend. Bound into gilt stamped red cloth. TEG. Fading to the spine. Corners are bumped. Name markered out on front fixed endpaper. Binding remains tight. There are some scattered pencil notations and corrections to the text. Originally published in German in 1899 as "Grundlagen der Geometrie" this is the first English language edition, considered to be a translation of the second edition incorporating changes done for the French edition. One of the most influential publications for 20th century mathematics. This work is from a series of lectures on euclidean geometry Hilbert gave at University of Göttingen, 1898-1899. Hilbert sets up a system of 20 axioms using three elements: points, straight lines, and planes, and their mutal relations: betweenness, "lies on", and congruence. Reference: DSB VI 388-395p.
