New York, Chicago, Washington: Brentano's, 1894. [1894] FIRST EDITION hardcover, gilt lettering/gilt playing card design on top cover, gilt lettering on spine. All edges in gilt. 245 numbered pages plus one advertisement at end. Not a facsimile or a more recent reprint, this is the 1894 edition. Condition of binding: Cloth darken with age, scattered discoloration/stains/soiling spots that have darken with age (larger, more significant areas on back cover). Spine age darken. Minor shelf wear. Fraying/light wear to top/foot of spine and corners. First hinge has crack (about 2¼ inches); old bookplate of Capital Bicycle Club Library on first pastedown endpaper [champion U.S. team in 1892/1893], small Brentano's sticker at bottom of rear pastedown endpaper. Endpapers are lightly toned/foxed with faint offset to first free endpaper (from bookplate). Scattered dust/wear to gilt edges. Preliminaries and text block lightly age toned with periodic light foxing. Overall, Very Good. Text is clear and readable. A nice, uncommon antiquarian book. This book presents a complete, proven system of instruction in Whist strategy, presented in clear, understandable language. Whist is a card game played with a full deck of playing cards by two teams of two players, in which the last card dealt indicates trump and the object of play is to win the majority of the tricks. Great reference book for Bridge card players, since Whist is the forerunner of Bridge. Very collectible book.
